Corporate Citizenship

Making the world a better place.

At The Walt Disney Company, we're constantly improving the way we do business to ensure we make a positive impact on the environment, our workplaces and the communities we serve:

  • From 2006 to 2009, our recycling initiatives decreased our amount of solid waste by 28,645 tons.
  • From 2006 to 2010, we decreased electricity consumption by 6.6% and gas emissions by 4.6%.
  • In 2009, we contributed more than $230 million in support of children's hospitals, culture and arts, not-for-profit organizations, military families and emergency relief funds around the world.
  • In 2009, our cast members and their families performed more than 569,000 hours of community service through Disney VoluntEARS, an internal organization with a mission to help charities and service organizations around the world.
  • Since 2009, we invested $15.5 million in reforestation and conservation projects to combat climate change and protect threatened wildlife.
  • In 2010, we contributed more than $198 million in cash, product donations and in-kind support to organizations and communities around the world.
  • In 2010, we granted $1,471,700 to nonprofit organizations in 33 countries through The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.
  • In 2010, we celebrated Earth Day by allowing Guests to exchange plastic bottles and aluminum cans for merchandise at Disney Stores.
  • In 2010, we contributed $7 million to the Climate Solutions Fund in support of environmental projects around the world.
  • In 2010, our cast members and their families dedicated more than 548,000 hours of volunteer service through Disney VoluntEARS.
  • In 2010, we contributed more than $8 million toward our people's education through our tuition reimbursement program.
  • In 2011, we built playgrounds and gardens in 12 underserved communities through Disney Magic of Healthy Living.

Our people, our companies and our global audiences inspire us to uphold outstanding corporate citizenship in a variety of ways. And we're particularly proud of our programs that encourage people everywhere to get involved in our efforts:

  • Disney's Friends for Change: Project Green
  • Disney Channel, Radio Disney and Disney.com empowered kids to take more than 3 million pledges to eliminate 52 million pounds of carbon emissions, recycle 8 million pounds of trash and save more than 1.5 billion gallons of water annually.
  • Disneynature's Earth
  • Disney planted one tree in honor of every moviegoer who saw Earth in the first week of release, adding nearly three million trees to Brazil's Atlantic Forest.
  • Disneynature's Oceans
  • Disney helped conserve more than 35,000 acres of coral reef in the Bahamas on behalf of moviegoers who saw the film during its opening week.
  • Give a Day, Get a Disney Day
  • Disney Parks provided a free, one-day admission ticket to anyone who performed a day of volunteer service at a participating organization.
  • Disney's Planet Challenge
  • Disney challenges 4th – 6th graders to create and implement their own projects to help the environment at their schools and in their communities.
